The Borderguard

We are an organization devoted basically to the safety of the world. The particular form that this takes is that we are the front line against The Shadow. We are the people who stand along the Blight border and fight to hold back the advance of the evil to the north.

  • Every country along the Blight border is responsible for its own section of the border, though any nation may request aid from the others if they are particularly beset.
  • The members of the armies of the various nations are all part of the general entitiy of the Borderguard, though allegience to one's own nation takes precedence.
  • Occasionally there will come a need for groups to function independant of one nation or another. People from a couple of the nations may band together temporarily. Ranking in such a situation is often directly related to the ranks that the individuals hold in their respective militaries, though this may be superceded according to the specialties of the individuals, political concerns, etc.
  • Sometimes there also will be a threat that must be faced that will require the combined efforts of several nations. This is where the Borderguard is at its finest. Typically a central commander will take the forefront, and they will organize the combined efforts of the forces from the various nations.
  • There also is provision, like above, for special task forces to be formed for the continuing purpose of investigating some happening along the Blight border or elsewhere.

Current Situation

Given our timeline, people might not be quite sure where things stand for the Borderguard and the Blight in general. There are probably two main things that people might be interested in knowing:

  • After a series of conflicts at Tarwin's Gap, the pass is finally in the hands of the Borderlanders, and there seems to be only small scale activity in the Blight to the north of the Gap. The guard has taken the opportunity to begin construction on some fortifications at a narrowing point of the pass at the highest point.

  • Somehow, there have been numerous shadowspawn incursions well south the Blight border, with sightings reported as far south as the area around Illian. Heavy activity around Cairhien, and west have raised the question of how the Shadow has managed to move large forces so far south without detection?

Benefits of Membership

The Borderguard is not an organization that goes out and recruits, we often times wait for players to show some interest. We aren't one of the big flashy guilds like the White Tower or the Children of the Light, and most players don't really seem to know what we're about. We're the people who fight the good fight, typically not really heralded as heros, but what we do we do because it has to be done.

However, that's not to say that there aren't good reasons to join the Borderguard. Here are a few things that make us worth considering:

  • Events. Simply put, our storyline is probably more central to the overall story-arc of the MUD than that of any other guild. We are the front line in the fight between the Light and the Dark, so if there's a big Event that has some bearing on the game's "metaplot" or other sort of larger good v evil struggle...odds are good that one of us is in on it. There are a variety of different types of roleplays as well as events that people can get involved in, especially with the recent focus on the Gap and the construction going on there.

  • The Members. We keep our numbers small and select. That means that you're going to get good, level-headed people to Roleplay with.

  • The Code. While the Roleplay is great, sometimes you need code. We have enough for most people to be satisfied. We include people who have worked hard to get where we are, so we know how the code works from the player perspective, and can help you rise as high as you want to go.

  • Portability. The Borderguard are a group of people that can get along with most everyone (except members of the Shadow of course). Who doesn't like someone that's obviously fighting the shadow and keeping the civilized lands from being overrun? As it is, we have good relations with a lot of people, which makes it real easy to get Roleplay in a lot of different places. We have people who wander around, so it's not a problem.

Joining the Borderguard

We keep the membership low, mostly because the process for joining is deceptively challenging. There is only one requirement at the moment. You don't have to worry about descriptions or backgrounds or hours or even form levels. You heard it, there's no minimum required to join. Just make sure you're more interested in the roleplay and then:

  • Impress us.

That's it. It's intentionally vague--we leave it up to you to figure out how to do it. It could be by showing us some great Roleplay abilities, or by having something to offer that is hard to find anywhere else. Or by being pretty cool and having a great background. Or by seeking us out ICly instead of OOCly (be careful about assuming you know that we are BG though). There are a lot of possibilities, you just have to find what works for you.

As for positions, well for the most part we are a combat oriented group. This means that to some extent you non-random channelers are out of luck. We do have a few non-combat positions available at all times though, in mostly an information gathering, scouting, and construction site managing capacity.

But who should you contact? You should contact Ernst, he's the current figurehead. Just poke him when he's online, or send him a mudmail (check out the mail commands, the mailbox is down and 1 north from recall) expressing some interest. You can also shoot an email to our guild email address:
