On the Sea of Storms the magic of the world comes from the One Power, also known as the Source. The One Power is split into the male and female halves called Saidin and Saidar respectively. People who control Saidin or Saidar are called Channelers. Spells are called weaves and are cast by 'weaving' strands of different elements together. In-depth detail goes on at [[Intro.Channeling |The One Power]], and new female channelers have ample opportunities to learn at [[WhiteTower/Main|The White Tower]].

The Wheel of Time is a fantasy series written by Robert Jordan. It currently consists of eleven books, with the final book coming out in the next few years. In the Wheel of Time Setting there exists two near all powerful beings. These two beings are the Creator and the Dark One (AKA: Shai'tan). At the beginning of Time the Creator imprisoned the Dark One in a prison, sealing him away from the wheel of time. The wheel of time is a seven spoke wheel, with each spoke representing an age. It is rotated by the One Power, which flows from the True Source. The One Power is split into a male and female half. These two halves are called Saidin and Saidar, which work in opposition and in unison much like ying and yang to turn the Wheel. The Wheel spins the fabric of time into place. This is the basic religious belief of the series.

The One Power which is split in two halves for male and female can be controlled by special individuals. People who can control the flow of the One Power are called channellers. In the Age of Legends most people who could channel the One Power, were called Aes Sedai. This organization was created for the betterment of the world at the time. In fact Aes Sedai stands for 'Servant of All'. However during an Aes Sedai experiment to discover a new power that was similar to the One Power which they wielded, they inadvertently damaged the Dark One's prison.

With the seal holding him in place weakened, the Dark One began to influence the world. Turning vain, greedy, and corrupt people into servants with promises of immortality and power. Eventually the people in the Age of Legends realized something was wrong and a war broke out between supporters of the Dark one who wanted to fully release him and the force of the light who wished to reseal his prison.

In the Age of Legends the Dragon was a man named Lews Therin Telamon, who eventually rose to command the Aes Sedai and the forces of the light in the struggle against the Dark One's forces. After 10 years of war, Lews Therin Telamon led his forces to victory in a daring assault on the site of the earthly link to the Dark One's prison, and was able to seal it off. However, at this moment of victory the Dark One tainted saidin, driving male channelers of the One Power insane. The male channellers devastated the world with the One Power, unleashing earthquakes and tidal waves that reshaped the planet. Their leader, Lews Therin, killed his friends, his family, and finally himself in his insanity. Eventually, the last male Aes Sedai was killed or cut off from the One Power, leaving the human race all but destroyed and only women able to wield the One Power safely.

With the last male Aes Sedai dead, the female Aes Sedai who remained began to rebuild the organization. However the Aes Sedai of today only vaguely resemble the Aes Sedai of the Age of Legends. Today they control the city of Tar Valon which is the home of The White Tower. The White Tower is a building that houses the Aes Sedai and doubles as a school. It was created shortly after the Age of Legends using channeling and Ogier [a non human race]

In today's world channeling is widely feared if not outright believed to be a myth. Male channellers are always feared and hunted by those who know of them. A specific sect of the Aes Sedai called the Red Ajah is dedicated to finding Male channellers in the world and severing them from the One Power, using a technique called gentling.
