The Wheel of Time is a fantasy series written by (the late) Robert Jordan. It currently consists of twelve books, with the next three books coming out in the next few years. The Wheel of Time has magic, monsters, nations, prophecy/ies, magic items, and large amounts of evil and angst. On the Sea of Storms the magic of the world comes from the One Power, also known as the Source. The One Power is split into the male and female halves called Saidin and Saidar respectively. People who control Saidin or Saidar are called Channelers. Spells are called weaves and are cast by 'weaving' strands of different elements together. In-depth detail goes on at The One Power, and new- or old, as the case may be- female channelers have ample opportunities to learn at The White Tower.
On the Sea of Storms there is one continent. This continent is broken up into medium to small nations. These nations for the most part have kings or queens for rulers and noble houses. The names of the nations are as follows: Altara, Amadicia, Andor, Arad Doman, Arafel, Cairhien, Ghealdan, Illian, Kandor, Murandy, Saldaea, Shiener, Tarabon, and Tear. In addition to the nations there are six major city-states. These are Aringill, Falme, Far Madding, Katar, Mayene, Tar Valon. More at The Nations.
On the Sea of Storms there is one group that are "the bad guys". The force of the Dark One are called The Shadow. You can tell from his name that he is the big bad of the setting. The Shadow consists of humans, non humans, and semi-humans. They're a diverse lot. Want to join? Well... that may be difficult.
